Banana Green Smoothie

Our long time favorite green smoothie! Back to classic yumminess this week. Gotta do some traveling soon, so trying to fill up with raw smoothies while I have access to my Vitamix. You never know if you easily find smoothie/juice bars in a trip, so fueling up now 🙂 Banana green smoothie is one of the most classic and common varieties, but it doesn’t make it less awesome. Banana makes this drink super smooth and almost creamy, and due to banana and orange dominating taste spinach is not tasted in it at all! Just a tip for those of you not super excited to have greens in your smoothie 😉

Because of banana’s predominant taste in this smoothie I also like to add flax oil in it. As an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids, flax seed oil is recommended for daily use. I usually include 1 tbsp of it in my smoothies and that way consume this precious oil with all its benefits in a super delicious way!

Zucchini Noodles Platter

Back to spiralizing madness! So happy I got that Tri-Blade spiralizer recently. It definitely add tons of variety to my raw veganism. And for $30 it’s definitely plenty of FUN! I’ve been spiralizing virtually every spiralizable (is that even a word? 😀 ) veggie I could find – zucchinis, cucumbers, turnips, beets, squash. And they all are so much fun in salads this way. Plus, the spiralizing itself is super quick and easy peasy, so I’m sure I’ll be making much more of these. Can’t wait to share more pictures of spiralized salads and platters with you guys!

Happy Berry Sunday

It’s a beautiful warm sunny Sunday in Seattle – Happy Orthodox Easter! And happy berry Sunday for me as well 🙂

Enjoying this amazing springy day on my backyard munching on delicious pineapple, blueberries and strawberries…..oh so yummm. After all the fasting I did last week I don’t feel particularly hungry and my affinity towards raw foods has increased. So, go fasts! They are an amazing way to reset your body’s unhealthy food addictions to zero and switch it back to loving natural fruits and veggies. As simple as this platter might appear to you, these amazing fruits of course also provide lots of benefits:

  • Pineapple – contains super high levels of manganese (essential for human health, absolutely necessary for development, metabolism, and the antioxidant system) and vitamin C
  • Blueberry – contains manganese, vitamin C, vitamin K, high in dietary fiber
  • Strawberry – contains essential unsaturated fatty acids, as well as vitamins and minerals

So, eat your fruits, boys and gals! 😀

Fruits are also the best allies of a raw vegan traveler – just chop up the pineapple, rinse blueberries, strawberries and other berries, package in containers and voila you’ve got your fresh, nutrient dense lunch packed with vitamins and health for your happy Sunday hike or road trip! Other awesome fruits for traveling are of course bananas and tangerines – those come in their own easy to peel package, so these guys are unbeatable for trips. Love love love raw vegan lifestyle! It’s a non-stop delicious fruit party 😀 All so light, colorful and good for you! And with this food you feel light and energetic all day, never too tired to go for a jog or a gym class. Benefits all around!

Dry Fast Experience and Recommendations

For the last week I’ve been doing an extra cleanse program – 2 days dry fasting + 1 day water fast. This was my very first time doing a dry fast and I have to say it’s a very interesting experience. Not only it’s a strong cleanse for your body, but it also is a great cleanse of your spiritual self. I’ve noticed that my occasional irritability and anger (that don’t happen that often of course 😉 ) got replaced with a feeling of inner peacefulness, and that was definitely an amazing bonus.

Now, back to physiology. First, I have to say that it feels absolutely fine without food and water for two days, although my raw vegan diet probably played a significant part here. In fact, dry fast was easier than water fast because there was absolutely no hunger for the whole two dry days. I was energetic, being busy, working, walking a lot, taking care of my garden. The only thing I didn’t do is driving just in case I would get lightheaded, which didn’t happen. But on the third day I woke up dry, dizzy and heavily breathing. Because the point of this fast was a short cleanse, I broke the fast right on the morning of the third day and started drinking water. The whole water day was a little bit harsh and low-energy, mostly sitting or laying in bed. And after that I came out of the fast completely on juices – I always very much recommend to do a rehabilitation period on freshly squeezed juices after your fast, equaling the length of the fast itself. In my case these were 3 days of juices. The very first juice should be dissolved with water (1:1) and drunken very slowly, with the following juice coming only in 2 hours.

The juice rehabilitation stage can actually continue as long as you would feel comfortable. But the most important thing about it is that you should continue it until you start getting energetic. It might sound strange – energetic after fasting on juices? Right? The thing is that during a water or dry fast our body is going through an extra deep cleansing, digging out the toxins from the very corners of your body and flushing them through blood and all bodily filters – kidneys, liver, skin, and that is the time when we feel low on energy, dizzy, emotionless etc. Technically, that is when the fast reaches its healing peak. But when we switch to raw freshly squeezed juices, the cleanse continues but now we are supplying vitamins and nutrients to help in the process. And every day of the juice fast the body continues it’s thorough cleansing while nurtured with juices, and eventually after fixing first bunch of problems it takes a break. That is exactly when we all of a sudden feel elevated energy levels and positive mood. And that is exactly the time to break the juice fast. The reason it is important to wait until the rising of energy level is because this way we let our body finish what it is currently working on and come out only when the body is giving us a green light – positive mood and increased energy. If you come out before that you might actually risk to have an extended rehabilitation, which means your energy would possibly stay low for several weeks or more. To speed up the process of getting your high energy levels back on juice fast I would recommend walking/jogging/exercising as much as possible. This way the rehabilitation would be shorter and you could get back to your normal self while feeling lighter, super energetic and happy pretty soon.

To sum up, here’s my Dry Fast Experience and Recommendations:

  • plan your fasts near or on the weekend
  • make sure you stock up on quality water and all juicing vegetables before you start
  • start small – 1 or 2 days, and increase slowly
  • exercise or just walk as long as you can, before you reach the healing peak
  • if dry fasting – come out first onto a water fast, then on freshly squeezed juices
  • if water fasting – come out onto freshly squeezed juices
  • rehabilitation period after fast should be at least equal or longer than the length of the fast itself
  • as soon as you have enough energy on rehabilitation, start exercising or walking
  • come out of rehabilitation only when you feel high energy levels

I am still on my juice rehabilitation now and I’m extremely enjoying these amazing nutritional concoctions that I make 🙂 This juice is my absolute favorite now, see recipe below!

Cranberry Orange Smoothie

Happy Easter to everyone!

We are celebrating with an amazing cranberry orange smoothie here. Whipped up this delicious colorful drink for the whole family in no time and served with some orange and blueberries. I am doing my fast for several day, so not joining in (will dwell on that experience later once I break the fast this coming week). But I’d like to say that despite being on fast right now, I have normal levels of energy that don’t interfere with anything I do. Of course I do have food cravings, but those are absolutely controllable and do not mess up my plans of fasting 🙂 We’ll see how tomorrow goes.

Strawberry Mono

I feel slightly overfed on raw vegan deliciousness such as zoodles, macaroons and kale chips from previous days. So today is a strawberry mono eating day for me! I love doing these light days from time to time – one type of fruit/berry and herbal tea all day. It cleanses and at the same time gives the digestive tract a break by providing only mono meals. If you think about it, our ancient ancestors did not have food in such abundance as we do nowadays, and it only makes sense that they had to be fasting/eating mono on a regular basis, which we should also benevolently do for ourselves. Such mono days improve digestion and hence increasing energy levels, overall being highly beneficial. Makes you feel light and bright on the following day!

Strawberry Mono

In addition to just being delicious strawberries also have other fantastic properties:

  • packed with antioxidants,
  • boosting immunity,
  • promoting eye health,
  • reducing inflammation,
  • and even keeping wrinkles at bay

Wow! Eat your berries guys and you’ll be super healthy and kicking 🙂

Zoodles

Zoodle obsession continues! Yesterday I spiralized a huge bowl of fresh crisp raw vegan zucchini noodles and used my favourite red-pepper dip as a sauce. Oh my was it fantastically delicious!! And super fast too – maybe the whole dinner preparation took about 15 minutes.
